About New Orleans, Louisiana: Tulane Stadium in New Orleans was the home of the New Orleans Saints and Tulane University Football for years, but this year it would host is last game ever and it would be Super Bowl IX. Residents of New Orleans were busy preparing to host and watch a battle of the NFL's two best defensive teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl 9 and this was sure to be a great battle.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 80997 people in attendance at the game in and it is estimated that another 56.5 million more excited football fans tuned in from their homes or other football parties around the world while tuning into NBC. Curt Gowdy, Al DeRogatis, and Don Meredith would call the game and the ratings for the game on this network were 42.4.
Team Pre-Season Stats: The Pittsburgh Steelers came into the 1974-75 season after two consecutive years of disappointing playoff losses and were looking to make a deeper run this season. Head coach Chuck Noll would be back at the helm and the Pittsburgh defence would once again help to lead the team to success during the regular season and playoffs. The Minnesota Vikings were looking forward to this season after losing Super Bowl 8 to the Miami Dolphins and they were looking for their first ever championship. The Vikings defence was also one of the strongest in the league and they would play a key role in the Vikings season success.
Team Roster: Key players on the Steelers roster included QB Terry Bradshaw, QB Joe Gilliam, RB Franco Harris, WR Lynn Swann, WR John Stallworth, DB Mel Blount, DL Joe Greene and LB Jack Ham and LB Andy Russell. The notable players for the Vikings included QB Fran Tarkenton, RB Chuck Foreman, WR Jim Lash, DL Carl Eller, DB Paul Krause, DL Alan Page, OL Ron Yary, and LB Jeff Siemon.
Game Highlights: This game would feature a battle between two of the top defence's in the NFL. The Pittsburgh Steelers defence known as the "Steel Curtain" would challenge the Minnesota Vikings "Purple People Eaters" defence in a game were 1 of these teams would step up and earn the victory. The first half of the game was a defensive struggle as predicted as only 2 points were scored off a Pittsburgh safety when Dwight White sacked QB Fran Tarkenton in the end zone at 7:49 into the second quarter. The 2 half saw an increase in scoring, but the defences both continued to play well. The Steelers defence though played better though as they only allowed 119 total yards on offence including a Super Bowl low 17 yards rushing. Touchdowns by Franco Harris and Larry Brown in the 2nd half were more than enough as the Steelers won their first championship with a score of 16-6.
Game MVP: The Most Valuable Player of the 9th Super Bowl was Steelers Running Back Franco Harris. Harris rushed 34 times for a record 158 yards breaking the mark which was set only a year ago. His 9 yard run in the 3rd quarter gave the Steelers a 9-0 lead and more than enough to win their first ever title.
Half Time Show: The halftime show was themed "Tribute to Duke Ellington" and featured performers Mercer Ellington and the Grambling State University Band.
Commercials:The average cost for a 30 second commercial during the 9th Superbowl was $107000. The Superbowl became a key show for advertisements as it was one of the most watched events in TV history.
