About New Orleans, Louisiana: The city of New Orleans would host Super Bowl 4 in the home of the Sugar Bowl, Tulane Stadium. Residents were busy getting the home of Mardi Gras ready as millions of fans from around the world would watch as the Kansas City Chiefs who were 13 point favourites would take on the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: A record crowd of 80562 people were in attendance at the game in and it is estimated that another 44.2 million more excited football fans tuned in from their homes or other football parties around the world while tuning into CBS. Jack Buck, Frank Gifford and Pat Summerall would call the game and the ratings for the game on this network were 39.4.
Team Pre-Season Stats: The Kansas City Chiefs entered the 1969-70 season after a disappointing loss to the Oakland Raiders in last years AFC Divisional Playoff. Head coach Hank Stram was looking to guide his team back to the Super Bowl for the first time since 1966 and this time were looking for a win. With quarterback Len Dawson as the team leader they would also need a strong effort from the whole team to make a serious run. The Minnesota Vikings were also looking to rebound after losing the NFL 3rd Place Game to the Dallas Cowboys last season. Head coach bud Grant would need a great season from QB Joe Kapp and the offence in order to make a playoff run this season. The defence which was lead by a strong defensive line including Gary Larsen, Jim Marshall, and Alan Page would also need to have Pro Bowl seasons to help the Vikings get to the Super Bowl.
Team Roster:Key players on the Chiefs roster included QB Len Dawson, LB Bobby Bell, OL Ed Budde, RB Robert Holmes, QB Mike Livingston, RB Mike Garrett, WR Otis Taylor and DL Jerry Mays. The notable players for the Vikings included WR Gene Washington, DL Carl Eller, QB Joe Kapp, DB Bobby Bryant, OL Ron Yary, OL Ed White, RB Dave Osborn, and TE John Beasley.
Game Highlights:The Kansas City Chiefs dominated the game on both sides of the ball on route to their first Superbowl championship. The Chiefs scored three field goals in just over 20 minutes of the first half as quarterback Len Dawson guided them down field play after play. Their defence also stepped up as they recovered a fumbled punt to take a 16-0 lead entering halftime. In the third quarter the Vikings tried to respond as Dave Osborn ran for a touchdown completing a 10 play 64 yard drive to cut the lead to 16-7. However, only 3 minutes later the Chiefs responded with a touchdown of their own and their defence did not allow another Vikings score as they went on to a 23-7 victory and Super bowl championship.
Game MVP:The Most Valuable Player of the 4th Super Bowl was Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback Len Dawson. He completed 12 of 17 passes for 142 yards, but his determined drives and leadership helped the Chiefs to an upset win. His 46 yard touchdown pass to Otis Taylor in the 4th quarter was a game clincher as it helped the Chiefs win the last championship game played before the merger of the AFL and NFL.
Half Time Show:The halftime show for this year's game had an appropriate them of "Mardi Gras" as it was in New Orleans and the featured entertainer was Carol Channing.
Commercials:The average cost for a 30 second commercial during the 4th Superbowl was $78000. This was a large increase in the cost as it increased $23000 over the previous year as many companies saw the advantage of reaching a larger market during this game.
