About Miami, FL: Miami was often the site of many important college football games and now residents of the city and surrounding area could look forward to the biggest football event of them all, Super Bowl 33. After many months of preparing the stadium and city visitors from around the world would be coming to their city to watch this event. Miami has had the nickname "Gateway to the Americas" and this week it would be where millions of football fans would tune in to watch the Denver Broncos play the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 74803 people in attendance at the 33rd Super Bowl and it is estimated that 83.7 million more football fanatics watched from home or other parties while tuning into FOX who covered the biggest sporting event of the year and had ratings of 40.2.
Team Pre-Season Stats: The Denver Broncos came into the season with the same team together than won the Super Bowl the previous year and were ready to defend their title. John Elway was once again back at the helm to lead the team and if they all could stay healthy were favourites to repeat. The Atlanta Falcons weren't expected to do much after a 7-9 season last year, but if Chris Chandler, Jamal Anderson, and Terance Mathis could have good years the Falcons could challenge for a playoff birth.
Team Roster / Salaries: Mike Shanahan continued to coach the Broncos to start the 1998-99 season and once again had superstars QB John Elway ($2.6 million) and RB Terrell Davis ($2.3 million) leading the offence on his team. Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey continued to start at WR and Shannon Sharpe was a mainstay at TE. Atlanta came into the season with Dan Reeves as their head coach and some familiar faces including QB Chris Chandler ($3.5 million) , RB Jamal Anderson ($1.25 million), LB Cornelius Bennett ($3.5 million) and K Morten Anderson ($0.7 million).
Game Highlights: The Atlanta Falcons started out the thirty-third Super Bowl with a 48 yard drive down the field which was completed by a 32 yard field goal by Morten Anderson and a 3-0 lead. Denver and John Elway responded with a 1 yard touch down run by Howard Griffith. Denver then stepped up their defence to prevent an Atlanta score and responded with a 26 yard Jason Elam field goal. Atlanta then missed a field goal and Denver once again responded with an 80 yard touchdown pass from Elway to Smith and quickly had a 17-3 lead. Morten Anderson added a field goal for Atlanta to pull a little closer at the half at 17-6. However, in the second half Denver once again responded as Griffith scored his second touchdown of the game and Elway added one of his own. Tim Dwight returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, but Denver was too much as Elway and the Bronco went on to win 34-19 and their second straight championship.
Game MVP: The MVP of the 33rd Super Bowl was Denver quarterback John Elway. Elway threw for 336 yards and a touchdown as the 38 year old quarterback looked as young as he did in his rookie year. After a long 16 year career in the NFL, Elway proved during this game why he was one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
Half Time Show: The halftime show was a Celebration of Soul, Salsa and Swing music. It featured such artists as Steve Wonder, Gloria Estefan, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and tap dancer Savion Glover.
Commercials: The average ad price of a 30 second commercial was $1.6 million and was a 23% increase from the previous year. There were some great commercials during this game including one from Budweiser where two men who are short on cash are forced to choose between a 6 pack of Bud Light or toilet paper at the grocery store. They chose the beer, but when asked whether they wanted paper or plastic, the choice was obvious.
