Team Pre-Season Stats: New York Jets head coach Weeb Ewbank entered the 1968-69 season with his team trying to make the post season for the time in franchise history. His starting quarterback Joe Namath had more experience under his belt and hoped to guide the offence and the Jets team to a playoff birth this season. They would have to contend with the always strong Oakland Raiders if they wished to make a playoff and championship run this season.

The Baltimore Colts came into the season as one of the greatest teams in NFL history led by head coach Don Shula and 10 time Pro Bowler Johnny Unitas leading the team at quarterback. The Colts were favourites to win both the NFL and Super Bowl championship between the AFL and NFL leagues.

Game Highlights:Earlier in the week Jets quarterback Joe Namath had guaranteed victory for his team over the Baltimore Colts in championship game. This was the first time that the championship between AFL and NFL would be called the Super Bowl. The Jets opened the scoring in the 2nd quarter as RB Matt Snell ran for a 4 yard touchdown to give the Jets a 7-0 lead at the half.

The Jets continued to roll as Jim Turner kicked 3 field goals in the second half to take a 16-0 lead over the favoured Colts. The older and more confident Colts could only score one touchdown late in the 4th quarter as they were shocked by the less experienced Jets from the American Football League. The Jets defence also played a key role in their victory as they intercepted Baltimore passes in the end zone to prevent any Baltimore comeback. Jets QB Namath ran off the field after the game waiving his index finger leaving no doubt which team was number one that season.

Game MVP:The Most Valuable Player of the 3rd Super Bowl was New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath. Namath completed 17 of 28 passes for 206 yards and directed an offence that totalled 337 total offensive yards.
