About Atlanta, Georgia: Residents of Atlanta were looking forward to hosting Super Bowl 28 in their football stadium, the Georgia Dome. They had prepared for months for the biggest sporting even in the world and were ready for thousands of visitors to their city. Millions of fans around the world would watch the Dallas Cowboys try to repeat as champions when they played Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVIII.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 72817 people in attendance at the game in Atlanta and it is estimated that another 90 million more excited fans watched from home or other football parties around the world while tuning into NBC.
Team Pre-Season Stats: The Dallas Cowboys came into the season as defending champions and had 6 returning Pro Bowlers still in the line-up. Led by Quarterback Troy Aikman and RB Emmitt Smith the Cowboys were odds on favourites to repeat as champions. The Buffalo Bills also came into the season with a strong team consisting of 12 Pro Bowl players and coming off of their 3rd straight Super Bowl defeat. Veteran QB Jim Kelly knew that this could be his last chance to capture a title with this team.
Team Roster: Buffalo's roster looked very similar to the previous year with Jim Kelly back as QB, Thurman Thomas RB, Andre Reed WR, Don Beebe WR, Pete Metzelaars TE, Steve Christie K and head coach Marv Levy. This was pretty much the same roster as previous years in which they had made it to the Super Bowl 3 straight times. The Cowboy's roster also looked similar to the previous season. Jimmy Johnson returned as head coach, along with QB Troy Aikman, RB Emmit Smith, WR Michael Irvin, WR Alvin Harper, TE Jay Novacek and K Eddie Murray.
Game Highlights: Dallas opened up the scoring as kicker Eddie Murray traded field goals with Buffalo kicker Steve Christie to build a 6-3 lead. In their 4th straight Super Bowl the Buffalo Bills responded with a touchdown from Thurman Thomas and a field goal by Steve Christie to take a 13-6 lead entering halftime. However, 55 seconds in the 2nd half Dallas forced Buffalo to fumble and safety James Washington ran 46 yards for a touchdown tying the game at 13. After this play Dallas RB Emmitt Smith took over. On the next drive he carried for 61 yards including a 15 yard touchdown run with a little over 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. In the fourth quarter Dallas had another inception from Kelly and Emmitt Smith scored yet another touchdown to give Dallas a 27-13 lead and a lead they would never look back on. Dallas would go on to win the game 30-13 and their second straight championship.
Game MVP: While helping Dallas win back-to-back championships Emmitt Smith was named the MVP of the 28th Superbowl. Smith carried the ball 30 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. He carried the ball 19 times in the second half and his first touchdown gave Dallas the lead and one that they would never relinquish.
Half Time Show: The halftime show was presented by Select Productions and the theme was Rockin Country Sunday. It featured country music performers Clint Black, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, and Wynonna and Naomi Judd.
Commercials: The cost of a 30 second commercial during this year's game was around $1 million US. Pepsi was one of the most popular advertisers during the game with over 90% of their ads appearing during the first quarter. Out of all advertisers Pepsi had the highest marketing reach and effect on consumers.
