About Pasadena, California: Pasadena has hosted the Parade of the Roses since 1889 and is no stranger to large football games. It is the home of college footballs most popular bowl game, the Rose Bowl. This year though they would host the biggest football game of them all Super Bowl 27. Thousands of fans from all over the world along with millions tuning in on TV would watch the Dallas Cowboys take on the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVII.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 98374 people in attendance at the game in Pasadena and it is estimated that another 90.9 million more excited fans watched from home or other football parties around the world while tuning into NBC.
Team Pre-Season Stats: The Dallas Cowboys were looking forward to the 1992-93 NFL season after getting thumped by Detroit 38-6 in the NFC Divisional Playoff the previous year. Jimmy Johnson would be back as head coach and Troy Aikman would be back at the helm as Quarterback. Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin would also be back and the high powered offence would hope to lead them to the Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills were coming into the season after their second straight disappointing Super Bowl loss. Team leader Jim Kelly would be back as quarterback and outside line backers Bruce Smith and Cornelius Bennett would leading the defence hoping to take Buffalo to a third straight Super Bowl and this time a win.
Team Roster: The Cowboys roster looked very similar to the previous season with QB Troy Aikman, RB Emmitt Smith, WR Michael Irvin, RB Daryl Johnston, TE Jay Novacek, OL Nate Newton, and OL Mark Stepnoski. The Bills lineup also looked similar including QB Jim Kelly, RB Thurman Thomas, WR Don Beebe, WR James Lofton, TE Pete Metzelaars, OL Bruce Smith, and OL Cornelius Bennett.
Game Highlights: In their third straight attempt to win a championship Buffalo opened the scoring. Thurman Thomas ran for a 2 yard touchdown and Steve Christie added the extra point to give the Bills a 7-0 lead only 5 minutes into the game. Dallas responded though as they intercepted a Jim Kelly pass and Aikman then passed 23 yards to Novacek to tie the game at 7. On they very next play the Cowboys D stepped up again sacking Jim Kelly and Jimmie Jones returned a fumble 2 yards to take 14-7 lead. It was a lead that Dallas would never look back on. Michael Irvin would catch two more touchdown passes before the end of the half to give Dallas a 28-10 entering the half. Buffalo only scored one more time in the game and it was by backup quarterback Frank Reich who completed a pass to Don Beebe. Reich had come into the game to replace Bills starting QB Jim Kelly who was injured. However, Dallas put the game out of reach when they scored 3 times in a little over 2 minutes in the fourth quarter. Dallas would go on to win 51-17 and becoming champions of the 27th Superbowl.
Game MVP: Troy Aikman completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns and was named the MVP of the game. Aikman's performance helped Dallas capitalize on a great defensive game where they recovered 5 fumbles and intercepted 4 passes.
Half Time Show: The halftime show was presented by Radio City and the theme was Heal the World. It featured pop superstar Michael Jackson along with 3500 local children.
Commercials: The average cost of a 30 second commercial was $850000 during the game and one of the most popular series of ads that year was for Budweiser. Budweiser presented Bud Bowl V where they featured 4 different commercials where Budweiser beer bottles were playing Bud Light beer bottles in a football game.
