About Tampa, Florida: Residents of Tampa, Florida who were used to great weather and large sporting events were ready to host the biggest event of them all, Super Bowl 25. Everyone was working hard to get ready for the 25th Anniversary of the game and millions would be watching the New York Giants take on the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV.

 

Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 73813 people in attendance at the game in Tampa and it is estimated that another 79.5 million more excited fans watched from home or other football parties around the world while tuning into ABC.

 

Team Pre-Season Stats: With an all-star defensive line up including Lawrence Taylor and Pepper Johnson the New York Giants and head coach Bill Parcells were hoping to avenge a 19-13 playoff loss the previous year to the L.A. Rams. Quarterback Phil Simms would help lead the other side of the ball and his offensive core would need to play big in order to make a serious playoff run.

The Buffalo Bills were ready for to go deeper into the playoffs are years of disappointing losses, most recently to the Cleveland Browns in the 1990 AFC divisional playoff. Head coach Marv Levy and Jim Kelly were back to take another run at playoff success.

 

Team Roster: The New York roster consisted of several key players including QB Phil Simms, RB Ottis Anderson, WR Stephen Baker, TE Mark Bavaro, LB Lawrence Taylor, and LB Pepper Johnson.

The Buffalo Bills roster had some familiar faces including QB Jim Kelly, RB Thurman Thomas, WR Andre Reed, WR James Lofton, TE Keith McKeller, and DL Bruce Smith.

 

Game Highlights: The opening quarter of the 25th Superbowl game was low scoring with both teams trading off field goals. Buffalo had scored a 95 points in their previous 2 playoff games, but offensive ball control by New York would be key in this game. The two teams would again trade of scoring in the 2nd quarter with touchdowns from Buffalo's Don Smith and New York's Stephen Baker. A safety from Bruce Smith would also be added by Buffalo to take a 12-10 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter New York would dominate the clock with a 14 play drive which was completed by running back Ottis Anderson's 1 yard touchdown carry. Buffalo would respond 8 seconds into the 4th quarter with a touchdown from their running back Thurman Thomas who ran 31 yards for the score to take a 19-17 lead. The Giants would add a field goal half way through the quarter to take a 20-19 lead making for one of the most dramatic finishes in Super Bowl history. With seconds remaining Scott Norwoods game tying 47 yard field goal went wide right helping New York to hold on to a 20-19 win and their second championship in 5 years.

 

Game MVP: The Giants set a record for ball possession in the twenty-fifth Super Bowl game with a total time of 40:33 and one of the keys to this was running back Ottis Anderson. Anderson was named the MVP of the 25th Super Bowl after he carried the ball 21 times for 102 yards and 1 touchdown. Anderson ran for a 1 yard touchdown in the 3rd quarter ending a 9:29 drive helping lead the Giants to victory.

 

Half Time Show: Disney presented the halftime show entitled "A Small World Salute to 25 Years of Super Bowl" and featured super boy band New Kids on the Block.

 

Commercials: Commercials during this years game cost an average around $800000 per 30 second segment. The most popular ad this year was by Budweiser and it was the 3rd episode of the Bud Bowl. It featured 7 hilarious ads pitting Budweiser versus Bud Light in a football championship game of beer.
