About New Orleans, Lousiana: Football fans in New Orleans were looking forward to hosting yet another big sporting event and this was the biggest event of them all, Super Bowl 24. For months the city had prepared to host thousands of visitors to the area and for millions for fans to watch from home as the San Francisco 49ers were taking on the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 72919 people in attendance at the 24th Superbowl game in New Orleans and it is estimated that another 73.8 million more football fans watched from home or other Super Bowl parties around the world while tuning into CBS. The ratings the game came back as a 39 for the network this year.
Team Pre-Season Stats: After finishing 8-8 in the 1989-90 season the Denver Broncos were coming into the season hoping to make the NFL playoffs. With Dan Reeves back as head coach and his super star quarterback John Elway leading the team the Broncos were hoping to improve upon last years record. The San Francisco 49ers were entering the season with a new head coach after the immortal Bill Walsh had stepped down after winning the championship last season. George Seifert was now taking over the head coaching duties and along with quarterback Joe Montana the 49ers hoped to repeat as champs.
Team Roster: The Denver Broncos roster consisted of QB John Elway, RB Bobby Humphrey, WR Vance Johnson, TE Orson Mobley, DL Greg Kragen, and DB Dennis Smith along with head coach Dan Reeves. The 49ers roster had some familiar faces including QB's Joe Montana and Steve Young, RB Roger Craig, WR Jerry Rice, WR John Taylor, TE Brent Jones, DB Ronnie Lott, and DE Charles Haley.
Game Highlights: The well known combo Joe Montana and Jerry Rice struck early in the game as Rice received a 20 yard pass from Montana only 4:54 into the first quarter. Denver responded with a field goal a few minutes later, but that was as close as Denver came in this game. San Francisco then scored 5 unanswered touch downs; including 2 more from Jerry Rice to take a 42-3 lead. This was too much for Denver as the San Francisco defence also stepped up holding Denver to 10 points in the game. The 49ers dominated all offensive categories including first downs, net yards, and time of possession on route to their fourth championship.
Game MVP: The MVP of the 24th Super Bowl was San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana. This was a record 3rd Super Bowl MVP for Montana as he led the 49ers past the Broncos 55-10. He set a record for 5 touchdown passes as he went 22-29 with 297 yards. This great performance helped San Francisco tie Pittsburgh for the most championship wins.
Half Time Show: Select Productions presented a "Salute to New Orleans/Snoopy's 40th Birthday" featuring performers Pete Fountain, Doug Kershaw, and Irma Thomas.
Commercials: The average cost of a commercial during the game was $700000 and there were several very popular ads. These ads included several by American Express featuring movie star Paul Newman. The second instalment of the Bud Bowl was also featured as Budweiser had several of these ads and others.
