About Stanford, California: Residents of the Bay Area in California were busy getting ready to host thousands of visitors to their area when they hosted Super Bowl 19. Stanford Stadium which had played host to many college football games would now showcase to the world one of the biggest football games. However, this time it would be a professional game and it would feature their San Francisco 49ers taking on the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XIX.
Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 84059 people in attendance at the game in and it is estimated that another 85.5 million more excited football fans tuned in from their homes or other parties around the world while tuning into ABC. The ratings the game for the game on this network were 46.4.
Team Pre-Season Stats: With over 20 years of head coaching experience, Miami head coach Don Shula was ready to contend once again in the 1984-85 NFL season. The offence would be lead by 2nd year quarterback Dan Marino who completed an impressive rookie season last year and was ready to lead his team to a Super Bowl Championship. The San Francisco 49ers were once again lead by head coach Bill Walsh and Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Montana. They were hoping to win the 2nd championship in 4 years and would also need help from the defence including DB Ronnie Lott.
Team Roster: Key players on the Dolphins roster included QB Dan Marino, RB Pete Johnson, WR Mark Clayton, WR Mark Duper, TE Dan Johnson, DL Doug Betters, and OL Ed Newman. The notable players for the 49ers included QB Joe Montana, RB Wendell Tyler, WR Dwight Clark, K Ray Wersching, OL Randy Cross, DB Ronnie Lott, DB Eric Wright and DL Fred Dean.
Game Highlights: The first quarter of the game ended with a score of 10-7 after a touchdown from each team and another field goal by Miami to set the record for the highest scoring first quarter in Super Bowl history. This was the last lead that the Dolphins would hold during the game. San Francisco exploded for three touchdowns in the 2nd quarter including 2 by Roger Craig. They went into the half with a 28-16 lead. They continued to dominate both offensively and defensively in the 2nd half as Craig added another touchdown in the 3rd quarter and the 49ers rolled to a 38-16 victory over the Dolphins. San Francisco's net yardage of 537 total yards was a Super Bowl record and helped them obtain a championship.
Game MVP: The MVP of the 19th Super Bowl was San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana. This was Montana's 3rd Superbowl MVP and led the 49ers to victory in the game. He completed 24 of 35 passes for 331 yards and 3 touchdowns and also rushed 5 times for 59 yards and a touchdown. His performance ranked him among the elite quarterbacks in NFL history.
Half Time Show: The halftime show was entitled "World of Children's Dreams" and featured a performance by the US Air Force band.
Commercials: The average cost for a 30 second commercial during the 19th Superbowl was $500000 and marked the first time that a one minute TV commercial cost $1 million. Ford presented a series of commercials that year to introduce their latest Ford Thunderbird model. Budweiser of course had their usual comedic beer commercials.
