About Pontiac, Michigan: Pontiac, a southeast Michigan town with a population of 67000 was ready to host thousands of visitors to their city who were coming to watch Super Bowl 16. Millions of viewers would tune into CBS to watch the San Francisco 49ers take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XVI in the Pontiac Silverdome.

 

Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 81270 people in attendance at the game in and it is estimated that another 85.3 million more excited football fans tuned in from their homes or other football parties around the world while tuning into CBS. The ratings the game for the game on this network were 49.1 and this was one of the most watched TV shows in American history.

 

Team Pre-Season Stats: The San Francisco 49ers were looking to rebound after 4 straight losing seasons and head coach Bill Walsh was also looking for his first winning season since taking over the team in 1979. Leading the offence in his first full season would be QB Joe Montana and he would need help from the rest of the offence if the 49ers were to make the playoffs.

Cincinnati also came into the season off of losing seasons and wanted to rebound this season. They would be led by a 2 time Pro Bowl quarterback Ken Anderson and it would be head coach Forrest Gregg's second year with the team.

 

Team Roster: Key players on the 49er's roster included QB Joe Montana, RB Ricky Patton, WR Dwight Clark, OL Randy Cross, DL Fred Dean, DB Ronnie Lott, and DB Dwight Hicks.

The notable players for the Bengals included QB Ken Anderson, WR Chris Collinsworth, RB Pete Johnson, WR Pat McInally, OL Anthony Munoz, LB Jim LeClair, and OL Max Montoya.

 

Game Highlights: 49ers quarterback Joe Montana opened the scoring in the first quarter as he ran for a 1 yard touchdown which capped a 68 yard drive. They had another long drive in the 2nd quarter which was completed by an 11 yard pass from Montana to DB Earl Copper. The driver was 98 yards and set a Super Bowl record. Ray Wersching added 2 field goals near the end of the second quarter to give San Francisco a record 20-0 lead going into halftime.

The Bengals closed the gap in the second half when QB Ken Anderson and WR Dan Ross each added touchdowns to bring the score to 20-14. However, 49ers kicker Wersching added 2 more field goals in the 4th quarter to help San Francisco to a 26-21 Superbowl win.

 

Game MVP: The MVP of the 16th Super Bowl was San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 157 yards, threw for one touchdown, ran for another and helped the 49ers complete drive after drive. Montana helped them to complete the drives that lead to the game winning field goals in the 4th quarter and their first championship.

 

Half Time Show: The halftime show was entitled "Salute to the 60's and Motown" and featured Up With People. Up With People is a group of volunteer student performers presented upbeat songs using vocal soloists, a choir, electric guitars, and other instruments.

 

Commercials: The average cost for a 30 second commercial during the 16th Superbowl was $324000. There were numerous commercials by car makers including Cadillac and Mercedes. Budweiser had a couple of comedic commercials as usual too.
