About New Orleans, Louisiana: Residents of New Orleans, Louisiana were looking forward to hosting their first ever NFL Championship game in the city as they would play host to Super Bowl 12 in the Superdome. Thousands of visitors from around the world would travel to the home of Mardi Gras to see the Dallas Cowboys take on the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XII.

 

Ticket Sales / Attendance: There were 76400 people in attendance at the game in and it is estimated that another 78.9 million more excited football fans tuned in from their homes or other football parties around the world while tuning into CBS. The ratings the game for the game on this network were 47.2 as the highest number ever would tune in to watch a Super Bowl.

 

Team Pre-Season Stats: The Denver Broncos would have head coach Red Miller in his first year and he was hoping to change the fortune of the Broncos who had never made the post season. He would depend on the leadership of superstar DL Lyle Alzado to help the team make the playoffs this year for the first time.

The only head coach in Cowboy's history Tom Landry would once again lead the team and he would have Pro Bowl quarterback Roger Staubach leading the offence. Staubach would also have RB Tony Dorsett to help him as the Cowboys avenge a disappointing playoff loss last season.

 

Team Roster: Key players on the Broncos roster included DL Lyle Alzado, LB Tom Jackson, DB Bill Thompson, OL Bobby Maples, QB Craig Morton, and WR Haven Moses.

The notable players for the Cowboys included QB Roger Staubach, RB Tony Dorsett, TE Billy Joe Dupree, DB Cliff Harris, WR Drew Pearson, DL Harvey Martin, DL Randy White and DL Ed Jones.

 

Game Highlights: Dallas hoped to destroy the Broncos hopes in their first ever playoff run with their experienced defence and offence. The Cowboys defence did not disappoint as they had 2 interceptions in the first quarter which lead to 10 points and Efren Herrera added another 43 yard field goal to give Dallas a commanding 13-0 lead going into halftime.

Denver responded in the 3rd quarter with 10 points of their own on a field goal by Jim Turner and a touchdown run by Rob Lytle. Dallas also had its own touchdown in the quarter by Butch Johnson to keep a commanding 20-10 lead. Robert Newhouse entered the game for the Cowboys and threw a 29 yard pass to Golden Richards with only 7:04 remaining in the game and crushing any chance of a Denver comeback. Dallas held this lead to win 27-10 and evened their Super Bowl record to 2-2 with the win.

 

Game MVP: The 12th Super Bowl for the first time in NFL history featured a pair of Most Valuable Players. DT Randy White and DE Harvey Martin led the Dallas defence as they forced 8 Bronco turnovers leading to a Dallas 27-10 victory. The Broncos were only able to complete 8 of 25 passing attempts as White and Harvey led an aggressive Cowboy's defence.

 

Half Time Show: The halftime show was entitled "From Paris to Paris of America" and featured performers Tyler Apache Belles, Pete Fountain and Al Hirt.

 

Commercials: The average cost for a 30 second commercial during the 12th Superbowl was $162000. Companies first saw that advertising during the game could be a major launching pad for their products as this game drew the largest crowd to ever watch a sporting event.
