About Los Angeles, California: The city of L.A. and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum would host the "AFL-NFL World Championship" this year which would later become know as Super Bowl 1. Thousands of fans would travel to the city and millions would watch from around the world as the rival leagues AFL and NFL would show case the champion of each league playing against each other for the undisputed championship of the world. This year the Green Bay Packers would be taking on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I.

 

Ticket Sales / Attendance:A total of 61946 people were in attendance at the game and it was not a sell-out as the game was televised by two networks NBC and CBS. The CBS broadcast team featured Ray Scott, Jack Whitaker and Frank Gifford, while the NBC team was composed of Curt Gowdy and Paul Christman. The ratings would be close during the game as NBC had 18.5 and CBS 22.6.

 

Team Pre-Season Stats: The Green Bay Packers were defending NFL Football Champions and wanted to prove this season that they were the best in the world. In this season's new format the NFL champ would play the champ of the AFL in a game where the winner was declared World Champion. Head coach Vince Lombardi along with starting quarterback Bart Starr would make sure that the Packers were number one contender for the championship. With a team still in tact from last season they were ready to begin the season and prove they were the best.

The Kansas City Chiefs were the champions of the upstart AFL and they wanted to prove this season that they were actually the best in the world. Head coach Hank Stram would have quarterback Len Dawson leading his team and the defence featuring 7 Pro Bowlers would also play a key role in a successful upcoming season.

 

Team Roster:Key players on the Packers roster included QB Bart Starr, DL Willie Davis, DL Henry Jordan, LB Dave Robinson, OL Bill Curry, RB Jim Taylor, and TE Marv Fleming.

The notable players for the Chiefs included QB Len Dawson, TE Fred Arbanas, LB Bobby Bell, WR Frank Jackson, DL Jerry Mays, DB Johnny Robinson, and OL Jim Tyrer.

 

Game Highlights:The Green Bay Packers took an early lead as quarterback Bart Starr completed a touchdown pass to WR Max McGee to give the packers an early 7-0 lead. McGee had entered the game after starting WR Boyd Dowler was injured earlier in the contest. The Chiefs responded in the 2nd quarter with a touchdown from Curtis McClinton and a field goal late in the second quarter. The Packers added another touchdown in the quarter to take a 14-10 lead into the half.

In the second half the Packers dominated the play as they scored 21 points off of 2 touchdowns by Pitts and another by McGee. McGee ended up being one of the stars of the game catching 4 passes for a total of 91 yards and helped the Packers win the first ever Superbowl championship and proved that the NFL was a dominant league.

 

Game MVP:The Most Valuable Player of the 1st Super Bowl was Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr. He led Green Bay in their 35-10 victory over Kansas City completing 16 of 23 passes for 250 yards and 3 touchdowns.

 

Half Time Show:The halftime show for this year's game featured the marching bands of the University of Arizona and the University of Michigan.

 

Commercials:The average cost for a 30 second commercial during the 1st Superbowl was $42000. This was a large television event where companies could take advantage of advertising to a large group of consumers who would tune in to watch the biggest game in football.
