Super Bowl Detroit: Battle in Motor City

Super Bowl Detroit is rapidly approaching: the big day comes on February 5, 2006.

Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan is the lucky location, having been chosen years ago (future Superbowl locations have been selected through 2009, so far).

The Detroit Superbowl won't be the first time the city has known action: Detroit, Michigan traces its history back to 1701, when it started out as French frontier outpost Fort Ponchartrain du Detroit. It was taken by the British in 1760, and passed into American hands in 1796. In 1820, it was incorporated as the town of Detroit. Michigan gained statehood in 1837.

That super city, Motown

Given its strategic location on the Detroit River near the Great Lakes, Detroit thrived in the ensuing century.

In 1903, Henry Ford chose Detroit as the location for his automobile factory, and it soon earned the moniker "Motor City" as the auto industry boomed. In 1959 Detroit became the home of the record label Motown, which showcased black artists from the local area before growing into a nationwide label and moving from Michigan to LA in 1972.

Superbowl #2 for Detroit

Detroit, Michigan has twice been tapped to host the Superbowl.

In 1982, Joe Montana's San Francisco 49s edged past the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl XV to win 26-21.

Right now it's anyone's guess which two football teams will be competing in 2006's world NFL championship bowl game, but it won't be long before pundits all over the world will be making their best conjectures -- even before the first football is passed in pre-season.

Detroit Super Bowl XL (40) tickets cost a cool $2000-5000 if you want to attend, but scalpers will soon be driving the price up, so you'd better get them immediately if not sooner.
