Superbowl basics

Everyone knows the Superbowl basics: the two best football teams in the league, one from each conference, play each other for the NFL championship.

In its earlier history the NFL Super Bowl chose the best team of two leagues, the AFL and NFL, but this ended in 1970 when the leagues merged to form the modern NFL.

The venue is chosen well in advance: this year it's Detroit. Traditionally, the world's biggest football game is played early in the new year beginning after the end of the regular post-season. The teams are always coached by their regular-season coaches.

Getting to Superbowl 2006

Here's how it works: after the regular NFL season, the four division champions of each NFL conference advance to the playoffs, along with two wild card teams (the non-division winners with the best records.)

The conference winners of the post-season football playoffs advance to the Super Bowl to duke it out. Wild cards make it to the Superbowl often enough to keep it exciting, and in Super Bowl XV the Oakland Raiders were the first wild card team to win.

Will the 2006 Superbowl winner be as unexpected? Will history be made? You'll need to stay tuned to find out!
