NFL Football, History and More!

NFL football had its beginnings way back in 1869, when Rutgers and Princeton played a college football game on November 6. This game used a modified version of the rules of the London Football Association and was more like a game of rugby than what we now know as football. Over the next seven years, the game developed its own rules and football officially became an American sport, with the first rules being written in 1876.

The first professional football players appeared in 1892, when Willian Heffelfinger of the AAA was paid $500 to play in a game against the PAC. From neighborhood and college teams, the sport eventually grew to the development of the first professional teams in 1896.

The Super Bowl :: The Ultimate Challenge

It was not until 1967 that the first Super Bowl Game took place. This became the deciding factor to determine which football league was the best in the country. A schedule of games throughout the season lead to the final game that is played on the last Sunday in January or the first Sunday in February each year.

Every year a different city is chosen for the game and this is done well in advance, often 3 to 5 years ahead of time. The idea behind this is probably so each football fans all over the country get a chance to see the game being played in a football stadium of a professional team, rather than always having it in one of the stadiums of the teams that are playing. Super Bowl XLIV will be the tenth SuperBowl played in Miami.

Future Super Bowl locations are:

  • Super Bowl XLIV, Miami Florida - 2010
  • Super Bowl XLV, Dallas, Texas - 2011
  • Super Bowl XLVII, Indianapolis, Indiana - 2012

The first game came about as a result of a merger between the NFL and the AFL. One of the agreements was that the winners of each league's season championship game would play off for the title of being the best football team. In 1970, these two divisions became known as the NFC and the AFC.

Some of the legendary Super Bowl winners include:

  • Dallas Cowboys
  • San Francisco 49ers
  • Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Green Bay Packers
  • Washington Redskins
  • New England Patriots
