2004 - The Janet Jackson Super Bowl

The Janet Jackson Super Bowl is the name that has been given to the 38th Super Bowl game played in Houston, Texas.

Fans eagerly looked forward to seeing the halftime show because it featured Janet Jackson. Superbowl fans were also eager to see her teamed up with Justin Timberlake for what they hoped would be the entertainment of the year.

This is one halftime show that has gone down in history because of the controversy surrounding the activity that took place.

Janet Jackson's Outfit

At the halftime show, Justin Timberlake made a tug on Jackson's top resulting in her breast being bared to the audience and the millions of fans watching on television. During the next few days there were accusations that this was deliberate and Jackson and Timberlake were actually facing charges. According to Janet Jackson, this was a wardrobe malfunction and wasn't supposed to happen. However critics that believe it was deliberate argued that:

  • Why would she wear a top that came apart if the action was unintentional?
  • Why did she have a covering over a specific part of her body when the top came off?
  • Why did Timberlake have to make a grab for Jackson in the routine?

Even though no answers were found but to accept that this was an accident and no charges were laid, changed were made to the televising of the halftime show and indeed many live events. From then on, viewers at home will experience a delay so that should something like this ever happen again, the editors have a chance to bleep it out.

What is your opinion on the Janet Jackson halftime show, accidental or planned?
