The First Super Bowl, The Start of it All!Startdate: January 15, 1967, Sunday. The Packers and Super Bowl 1 made history, and since then, the Super Bowl has rolled on like a sports juggernaught, bringing passion to the hearts of football fans one and all as their favorite teams work their way to the playoffs. Why 1967?By the mid-1960s, it was clear that the NFL would soon absorb the American Football League, the fourth league of that name. It would take a few years to work out all the details, but the heads of the leagues wisely decided that they would start holding a yearly bowl game between the best teams from each league in order to keep up fans' interest. Although the contest was officially known as the AFL-NFL World Championship, thus was born the Super Bowl, and it was decided that Super Bowl I would take place after the regular season of 1966. This put it at the beginning of 1967, so that the fans could have one last great winter hurrah for the sport before it went dormant for the first half of the year. Super Bowl I was an immediate success. One bowl game, one leagueThere had been bowl games before, but the Super Bowl was the first of its kind. That first Super Bowl was played at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles before 61,946. Quarterback Bart Starr was the first Most Valuable Player as he led the Packers to a 35-10 victory over Kansas City. Starr completed 16-of-23 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns. Now that the leagues had come together as one, it made sense to institute a winner-take-all game something like baseball's World Series. Every year, rather than merely be happy about their team winning a division, fans could watch them go on and strive to be called the best team in the world. The game never looked back. Thank you, Super Bowl I!
